Vinyl has returned to the center of recorded-music collecting, while electronic music has supplied both new releases and durable catalog titles. UK vinyl LP sales reached 6.7 million units in 2024, and US LP/EP shipments reached 43.6 million units. Official Charts data also shows electronic and dance albums competing with major new releases and returning to the UK chart years after their original release.

UK vinyl market scale and growth
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) reported 5.5 million UK vinyl LP sales in 2022, the highest annual level since 1990. Vinyl represented 55% of UK physical album sales by trade revenue that year. These are market-wide figures rather than electronic-music-only totals, so they describe the commercial setting in which electronic records compete.
The market continued to expand in 2023. UK vinyl LP sales rose 11.8% to 6.1 million units, and the BPI recorded a 16th consecutive year of vinyl LP sales growth. The 6.1 million-unit total was also the highest annual UK total since 1990. BPI, “Women enjoy a record-breaking year in music in 2023” reports the 2022 and 2023 figures.
Growth continued in 2024. UK vinyl LP sales reached 6.7 million units, up 9.1% year over year, marking the market’s 17th consecutive year of album-sales growth. Vinyl album revenue reached £196 million, up 10.5% from 2023. Official Charts, “UK music consumption hits new high with record-breaking results in 2024” reports both the unit and revenue measures.
| UK vinyl measure | Period | Result |
|---|---|---|
| LP units sold | 2022 | 5.5 million |
| LP units sold | 2023 | 6.1 million |
| LP units sold | 2024 | 6.7 million |
| Vinyl album revenue | 2024 | £196 million |
The sales mix also included substantial demand for current releases. Taylor Swift’s The Tortured Poets Department sold 111,937 UK vinyl copies in 2024. Separately, BPI’s yearbook reported that seven of the UK’s ten best-selling vinyl albums in 2024 were new releases from that calendar year. BPI, “BPI’s new Yearbook highlights breadth & vibrancy of British recorded music” provides the new-release share.
For electronic music, the broader implication is a market with room for both fresh pressings and reissues. The figures do not identify how many copies were electronic albums, but the Official Dance Albums Chart shows that electronic titles were visible across both release cycles and long-running catalog activity.
US vinyl market scale and genre context
The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) reported 43.2 million US LP/EP shipments in 2023, with an estimated retail value of $1.3502 billion. In 2024, shipments reached 43.6 million units, up 1.0% year over year, while retail value reached $1.4429 billion, up 6.9%.
Vinyl albums outsold CDs in the United States for a third consecutive year in 2024: 44 million vinyl albums compared with 33 million CDs. The RIAA’s 2024 report presents those rounded format totals alongside the LP/EP shipment and value measures. RIAA, “2024 Year-End Revenue Statistics” is the source for the 2023 and 2024 US figures.
The RIAA’s 2025 report recorded 46.8 million US vinyl shipments, up 7.9% from 2024 on its wholesale basis. US vinyl revenue reached $1.0429 billion in 2025, up 9.3% year over year on that same wholesale basis. Because the 2025 revenue measure uses a wholesale basis, it should not be compared directly with the 2024 retail-value figure as though they were the same measure. RIAA, “Year-End Recorded Music Revenue Report ’25” reports the 2025 results.
Earlier US data shows when vinyl first crossed the CD threshold in album volume. Luminate reported 41.7 million US vinyl albums in 2021, up 50.4% year over year. Vinyl album volume exceeded CD album volume that year, 41.7 million to 40.6 million units. The same report recorded a weekly vinyl-sales record of 2.11 million albums in the week ending December 23, 2021. Luminate, “2021 U.S. Year-End Report” gives the measurement date for that weekly record.
Electronic music’s US genre context is older and narrower than the overall market totals. Nielsen’s 2014 genre breakdown placed dance/electronic at 4% of US vinyl LP sales. Its format breakdown found vinyl accounted for 32% of physical EDM sales, while its store-strata breakdown assigned 45% of US vinyl LP sales to independent retail. These are 2014 measures and should not be treated as current market shares. Nielsen Music, “2014 Nielsen Music U.S. Report” reports them.

Catalog longevity in the UK dance chart
Chart weeks provide a way to see electronic music’s catalog depth, although they are not the same as vinyl-unit sales. On October 25–31, 2024, Daft Punk’s Discovery had 357 chart weeks and a peak of number 1. Faithless’s Forever Faithless - The Greatest Hits had 397 chart weeks and a peak of number 1, while The Prodigy’s Their Law - The Singles 1990-2005 had 509 chart weeks and a peak of number 1.
Massive Attack’s Mezzanine had 290 chart weeks and a peak of number 1. Pacha - Ibiza Classics had 328 chart weeks and a peak of number 1. Dave Pearce Trance Anthems 2 had 139 chart weeks and a peak of number 3. These counts are chart-history measures for the specified week, not estimates of cumulative sales.
Two of the catalog titles were still ranked on that October chart. Forever Faithless - The Greatest Hits ranked number 27 after 397 chart weeks. Their Law - The Singles 1990-2005 ranked number 22 after 509 chart weeks. Official Dance Albums Chart, October 25–31, 2024 reports the positions, peaks, and weeks.
The comparison below highlights the difference between recent chart entry and accumulated chart presence.
| Title | Position in the specified week | Peak | Chart weeks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dreamstate — Kelly Lee Owens | 2 | Debut | New entry |
| Discovery — Daft Punk | 9 | 1 | 357 |

Electronic and dance activity in 2024
The chart data also records activity earlier in 2024. For June 21–27, Moby’s Always Centered at Night debuted at number 3 on the UK Official Dance Albums Chart. Mu-Ziq’s Grush debuted at number 5. Peggy Gou’s I Hear You ranked number 15, had a peak of number 3, and had 2 chart weeks. Moby’s album had a number 3 peak in its June chart week. Official Dance Albums Chart, June 21–27, 2024 reports these entries.
The same June chart shows compilation and catalog endurance. The Annual 2024 - Ministry of Sound had a number 1 peak and 26 chart weeks. Cream Superclub Classics had a number 1 peak and 81 chart weeks. Forever Faithless - The Greatest Hits had a number 1 peak and 385 chart weeks.
Earlier, on the chart covering March 22–28, 2024, Four Tet’s Three reached number 1. Electribe 101’s Electribal Memories debuted at number 4. Official Dance Albums Chart, March 22–28, 2024 reports those positions.
Taken together, the 2024 chart snapshots show three distinct patterns: new electronic albums can enter near the top; compilations can remain active for dozens of weeks; and foundational albums can return to the chart after hundreds of weeks. The UK and US market totals establish the scale of vinyl’s wider revival, while the Official Charts observations show how electronic music participates through new releases, reissues, compilations, and long-lived catalog records.
